ever since a horrible doctor at work made a few snide remarks at me (well in my general direction) and brought in her first attempt of macarons.. I've wanted to make some of my own.... if only to show that they cant be that hard (seeing that I've never made macarons before)... and its nice to share with my colleagues (as well as a maybe little ha ha shows you to the doctor)

nothing like a little motivation to give me a little cooking challenge.... so I've been busily researching techniques for good macarons and from what I read I shouldnt be too hard as long as the egg whites are whipped properly... when I looked at her (the doctor) macarons (before my research) I said the egg whites needed more whipping... of course I wasnt stupid enough to say it to her I said it to another nurse

I came across a few recipes and I cant wait to get to our new place so I can test out some macaron recipes....
anyone got a good recipe to share???

I'll update you when I give them a try

Moving Problem

I'm sure we arent the only ones who try and eat whats in the cupboard before moving.. therefore making it easier to move because theres less there and it helps to use up stuff that was there that hadnt been eaten... only problem I have at times like this is that I dont usually feel like whats left (which is probably why its been left in the first place) or I end up with weird combinations because I'm trying to use stuff up....

whats your favourite "use it up" recipes???

Hole In One Cake

yesterday was my Mum's birthday and a week ago today was my hubby's birthday... if I hadn't packed up the pantry I would've made something for Mum but at the stage of packing we're at meant that I couldnt make anything for her... if I was going to make her something it would probably be along the lines of red velvet being that red is her favourite colour and I haven't made a red velvet cake before... I know what your thinking... how could she have never made a red velvet cake? well I've had plenty of other recipes to test out (but if you have a good red velvet recipe feel free to share it with the class :P )

for my husband's cake I left out a few ingredients and ended up making a fudge cake with chocolate ganache to ice the cake... most of my fancy utensils have been packed up (and I do have a fair few of them) but I again left a few out to make this cake for my hubby... one of them being an egg ring which I used to cut the hole out of the cake

so this is what it looked like:

to make the golf ball I used the cake that I scooped out for the hole and dipped it in white chocolate...

the green glitter around the edges I bought from a party shop and I liked it because it kind of looked like grass which is what I wanted it to look like...the light green sugar I put on top was because chocolate ganache doesnt really look very golfy

so I put some sugar in a bowl and added a couple of drops of green food colouring and used a fork to mix it through until it was all coloured... then I let it sit for a few hours to dry and then broke up the lumps with a fork before sprinkling it on the cake

the photos are a bit blurry but you get the gist

and I even snuck it to the place we had dinner and got the waitresses to bring it out all without my hubby knowing... the only thing they didnt do was light the candles.. oh well cant have everything go your way I guess

Note To Self 2

I got some lesions removed just over a week ago... easy yeah.... annoying even more so... being a nurse I said to the dr that I would just take them out myself and I stated clearly I'll take them out after 12-14 days and he said no they can come out after 7-8 days.... I've never taken sutures out that early (you only take them out of the face earlier than 12-14 days)

but being just a lowly nurse and not having been a nurse for very long (2 years) I thought I should listen to the dr and be a good little nurse and take the sutures out as instructed.... I needed a bit of help to get the ones out from under my arm so my Mum played nurses assistant and helped me take the sutures out but the ones in my leg... I took them out

I steri striped the hell out of the one under my arm being more worried that it was going to dehis and have to deal with that again... the one on my leg looked good so I just put an op site on it and went on my way...

I fussed around this afternoon and then this evening I went to sit on the couch and sat down funnily sort of on the leg that had the sutures in...  I've done it a few time while I had the sutures in and it hurt... well I did it again and didnt give it much thought for about 5- 10 minutes

well until I went upstairs and thought I'll just check the dressing to make sure it was okay.. and there was blood on it.... all I thought was f*#k (I wont properly swear because its not lady like but the word did cross my mind) so I undid the top of the op site and saw that it had dehisced and that I needed to go to the emergency room to get it resutured....

my lovely husband (whose been in a cranky mood all day because of his sore feet) offered to drive me to the hospital and was nice enough to stay and watch the tv quietly while I got sutured back up

I make a terrible patient... 100% the worst patient.. but I had a bit of a chuckle with the nurses while getting sutured back up... I'm sure the dr didnt really like me asking what kind of local he was using and me looking to see what kind of suture material and size he was using but being a nurse... I HAVE TO KNOW!!!!

and this is the exact reason why I'm a terrible patient.... I have to know and I have to watch everything thats happening

luckily he was a very nice dr and he didnt seem too bothered with me asking what kind of local he was using and this time I'm leaving them in for 14 days :P

and I even had my other one looked at and patched back up... I really thought if anything was going to dehis it would have been the one under my arm... so now I have a massive dent in my leg (which the dr promised would go away after the sutures get taken out and a half numb leg...

and with that I'm going to go to bed and hope that it all looks better in the morning

I hate moving... and I've done my fair share of moving (I've moved 6 times in 6 years) so I should know.... originally we were going to be building our house this year but since I got reinspired by nursing and my job moved me  it looks like we're moving again.... my hubby had no plans of moving and I was just going to be commuting up and back every week and staying with my sister... but then a position as a chef came up at the hospital I'm working at... I told my hubby about it and he eventually came around (after a little persuasion :p) and we are moving... in about 2 weeks (that seems closer than I expected)

one things that I realise every time I move is I have a lot of shit... and its a pain in the arse to move so much shit but I just cant bring myself to throw anything away just in case I need it at a later time.... yes yes I'm sure your thinking of that dreaded H word... but I swear I'm not

my hubby however... disagrees :p

oh well I have been throwing a fair amount of stuff out this move... I'm sick of carting stuff that I haven't used in the past few years that I'm happy to part with... if I throw it out thats completely different

oh well I better get back to packing
